Bollywood dance presentation
Bollywood dances
Bollywood is the Indian dance created for the Indian cinema ("Bollywood" is a word combining "Bombay" and "Hollywood").
Bollywood dance mixes the traditional, the modernity and the playfulness. It represents the fusion of several Indian dances: Indian classical dances, Indian folk dances and Western dances.
Old movie choregraphies were mainly inspired by the Indian classical dances (like Bharata Natyam, Kathak, Odissi), and by Indian folk dances (like bhangra dance from Punjab, garba and dandiya dance from Gujarat, bhavai and ghumar dance from Rajasthan and so on).
In Bollywood movies, dances add rythm to the story and often describe love intrigues, dreams, festival scenes. The item number is particularly well-groomed and daring. It is a theater-dance that tells through gestures, facial expressions and movements a love story, a human life scene, the representation of a god (the placement of dancers can reveal the image of an Indian deity with multiple arms). Every expression and movement is done according to the meaning of the lyrics.
Bollywood dance's appeal relies on one side on the beautiful music, the glamor costumes, the jewelry, the hairstyles and make-up and on the other hand on the energy, the grace of the movement and the expressiveness. Every detail is important (like the smile).
This is a very rhythmic dance, which use a lot of body parts, from feet to the eyes, making one's body speak. It is also a highly choreographed dance, with armwork and footwork, body postures, specific hand gestures (mudra), neck movements, head movements, facial expressions. It teaches you the skill, the grace and the expressiveness, while acting on the tonicity of your body.
Bollywood dance is also a dance therapy: the beautiful music, the body control, the creativity stimulation have a positive effect on the mind.
